// MAESTRO IMPRO with Patti Stiles
Maestro Impro™ is an elimination format created by Keith Johnstone.
It is often described as a ‘crash-and-burn-elimination-style’ format. Yet what the audience sees is quite different from the philosophy and mechanics behind the format. In reality, Maestro is about support, team work and working together to create a show with variety and excitement for the audience.
For the performer, Maestro offers a show contrasting games with free scenes, group/pair scenes and solo work. Maestro is challenging for the players as they do not know who they will play with or what they will be asked to do. It also helps players learn and understand the overall shape of a show to see how each individual scene influences and impacts the whole performance. Plus, as the audience scores the scenes, it teaches the performer how to fail good-naturedly, plus how an audience views a show and what interests them.
Patti is an actor, director, author, playwright and teacher who specializes in improvisational theatre. She is a member of the ITI Artistic Committee (CA), a founding member of the award winning Die Nasty – improvised soap opera (CA) and former Artistic Director of Rapid Fire Theatre (CA), Dream Kitchen Theatre (CA) and Impro Melbourne (AU). In 2021 she released her first book Improvise Freely.
Her tutelage was a spark of inspiration for the birth of London’s Spontaneity Shop and she is a regular teacher / director for Closer Each Day (UK), Improverket (SW), Smoking Sofa (FR), Teatro A Molla (IT) and I Bugardini (IT), B.L.U.E – the musical (IT), Courtyard Playhouse (UAE) and the award winning Austentacious (UK). Her mentorship has strongly influenced many improvisors and improvisation companies all over the world. The Canadian press has given her the titles “Impro Doyen” and “Queen of Improvisation”.
